Wisdom teeth come in between the late teens and mid twenties, and most jaws don't have room for them. They push against the molar in front, come in sideways, or break through only partway. A partly erupted tooth leaves a flap of gum that traps food and bacteria, and that flap gets infected; dentists call it pericoronitis, and it's the usual reason for a sudden, swollen, hard-to-open-your-mouth kind of pain. A tooth that's fully stuck in the bone can ache steadily or form a cyst around it without ever showing.
