Why a lost filling or crown shouldn't wait
The tooth under a crown or filling was already weakened; that's why it needed one. Exposed, it's sensitive to hot, cold and sweets, its edges chip easily, and bacteria get into dentin that was sealed for years. A few days is usually fine with the steps below. A few weeks often means decay under the old restoration, a tooth that has shifted so the crown no longer fits, or a break that turns a simple recement into a root canal or an extraction.
What to do right now
- Keep the crown. Rinse it and put it in a small bag. Bring it; it can often go right back on.
- Don't glue it. Household adhesives damage the tooth and the crown. A pharmacy sells temporary dental cement, which is fine for a day or two.
- Cover the tooth with dental wax or sugarless gum if an edge is sharp, and chew on the other side.
- Avoid very hot, cold or sugary food until you're seen.
- If you swallowed the crown, don't worry about it; call and we'll make a new one.

The $99 exam and X-rays come first, so our dentist can see whether the tooth under the restoration is still sound. Then the repair, priced in writing before it begins:
- A crown that still fits on a healthy tooth is cleaned and recemented in the same visit.
- A crown that no longer fits, or a tooth with new decay underneath, gets a temporary crown that day and a new permanent crown made and placed here.
- A lost filling is usually replaced the same visit with a tooth-colored filling; a large one may call for an onlay or a crown instead.
- An implant crown that came loose is checked, and the screw retightened or the crown recemented, in this office.

What if the tooth broke along with the crown?
Then the X-ray decides. A small break may still take a new crown. A break below the gumline or a split root sometimes can't be restored, and our dentist will explain the extraction and replacement options in writing rather than cementing a crown onto a tooth that won't hold it.
My implant crown is loose. Can you fix that?
Yes. A loose implant crown is usually a loosened screw or failed cement, both fixed in this office. Don't chew on it in the meantime, and if it comes off completely, keep it and bring it in.
